Hulless Barley has a pleasant chewy texture, more fiber and nutritional value than pearled barley. Hulless Barley is one of the most nutritious grains on earth. Hulless Barley is one of the most nutritious grains on earth. Hulless barley refers to a type of barley grown in which the tough inedible outer hull is loosely adhered to the kernel. The outer hull is so loose, that when this barley is harvested in the field, the outer hull usually falls off, thus requiring little to no processing to remove the tough inedible outer hull. Because this product requires minimal cleaning, most of the bran and endosperm is left intact and the germ is present. Barley has the lowest glycemic index of any grain, about 1/3 that of wheat. So, diabetics can consume three times the hulless barley they can wheat. Hulless barley also has a different gluten structure than wheat. This is good news for many individuals with wheat allergies. Often they can consume hulless barley. Naturally high in protein and fiber with a low glycemic index, hulless barley is high in beta glucan that can lower cholesterol. In 1942 a group of like-minded people gathered on a farm in Western New York and founded the Shiloh Community. Their common goal was to live and work together in health and harmony. To help support themselves and sustain their lifestyle they created a bakery and became known for their hearty, healthy all-natural products. Organic certification had not yet been invented.
